Microneedling

Microneedling in Southwest Florida

If you are struggling with the outward signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars, but can’t afford the cost nor the downtime of major laser treatments, then microneedling may be the perfect treatment for you. While darker skin types are more prone to side effects from lasers, they are usually ideal candidates for microneedling. It is ideal for patients who want more rejuvenation than what typical peels and microdermabrasion can offer. Our professionals at Skin Wellness Physicians in Naples and Marco Island are knowledgeable and dedicated to helping you improve your skin with some of the best microneedling that Southwest Florida has to offer.

Microneedling:

  • Improves wrinkles and minimizes pore size
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Improves surgical, burn, and acne scars
  • Can reduce hyperpigmentation (melanoma and brown spots)
  • Can reduce the appearance of stretch marks

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses a medical device that glides across the skin with hair-thin needles to create a controlled wound into the upper layers of the skin.  This process triggers the body’s natural healing process, boosting collagen and elastin production, and revitalizes your skin.  This repair process results in a thicker dermis with the appearance of softer wrinkles and pores. Microneedling also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical anti-aging serums and creams to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.  Additionally, microneedling can improve the appearance of stretch marks. While microneedling is most commonly used on the face, it can improve the appearance of stretch marks and may be used on all areas of the scalp, neck, and body. Skin Wellness Physicians uses Collagen P.I.N. for microneedling, which uses sterile, disposable cartridges. The treatment is completed in less than an hour.

What can I expect from treatment?

Most patients will experience redness and mild swelling (similar to a mild sunburn) for 24-48 hours.  You may also experience minimal pin-point bleeding and/or bruising. Within a week or two, you will notice that your skin is smoother and more radiant looking. Full effects won’t be seen until a few months later after several treatments have been completed.  This procedure is ideal for any skin type.

What should I avoid on my skin after treatment?

To ensure the proper healing environment, avoid retinoids, glycolic/salicylic acid, acne creams, harsh scrubs, exfoliating products, and bleaching creams. Exposure to the sun should also be avoided and sunscreen (with an SPF of 30 or higher) should be used. Directly after your treatment and on days one through four, we recommend using only mineral based makeup and sunscreens. You may resume your regular makeup and sunscreen on day 5 of post treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks until you achieve your desired result. The number of treatments required will depend on each individual patient’s response to the treatment.  Most patients will begin to see results after the very first appointment and ideal results after at least three treatments.  Patients with deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, acne scarring, and smokers are some examples that may require more than 3 treatments to achieve the desired results. This would be considered the corrective phase, after which patients should consider 1-3 treatments per year for maintenance.

Home Treatment vs. Microneedling

Dermarollers are available to allow you to do microneedling at home, but performing the treatment by yourself can lead to problems that can be avoided when treated by a skilled professional at Skin Wellness Physicians. Many dermarollers are made of low quality materials that cannot be sterilized to the same degree as medical grade materials. Using a non-sterile device to puncture your skin can lead to infection. Dermarollers also lack the necessary precision and power necessary to provide safe, effective, and more predictable results. Our treatments are cost effective and require little to no downtime away from work or other activities.
