Microneedling

Stimulate Collagen Production in Marco Island and Naples, Florida

People who want to reduce the appearance of acne scars, enlarged pores, or who are struggling with outward signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, have several options when it comes to cosmetic treatments. Not everyone can afford the cost or downtime necessary after major laser treatments, however, which makes microneedling at the Naples-area Skin Wellness Physicians the ideal treatment.

Microneedling is also effective for people with darker skin types, who are more prone to side effects from lasers, and for patients who want more rejuvenation than what typical peels and microdermabrasion can offer. Our professionals at Skin Wellness Physicians in Naples and Marco Island are knowledgeable and dedicated to helping each person improve their skin.

What Is Microneedling?

A microneedling session involves a specialized device that glides across the skin, using hair-thin needles to create controlled wounds in the uppermost layers of the skin. This process triggers the body's natural healing process, boosting collagen and elastin production to revitalize the tissue.

Microneedling also creates superficial micro-channels that allow topical anti-aging serums and creams to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.

What Can Microneedling Address?

While microneedling is most commonly used on the face to soften the look of wrinkles, fade hyperpigmentation, and shrink pores, it can also improve the appearance of stretch marks or scars—from acne, surgery, or burns—and may be used on all areas of the scalp, neck, and body.

Microneedling at Naples and Marco Island’s Skin Wellness Physicians uses needles no larger than the diameter of a hair to prompt a healing response that smooths, thickens, and tightens the skin via the creation of new collagen and elastin. The microchannels also allow for easier absorption of topical products.

What Happens After a Microneedling Session?

Most patients will experience redness and mild swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, for 24 to 48 hours after a treatment session. There may also be minimal pinpoint bleeding and bruising. Within a week or two, patients will notice that their skin is smoother and more radiant looking, though the full effects will not be seen until a few months later, after several treatments have been completed.

To create ideal healing conditions, avoid retinoids, glycolic/salicylic acid, acne creams, harsh scrubs, exfoliating products, and bleaching creams after a microneedling session. Exposure to the sun should also be avoided, and sunscreen (with an SPF of 30 or higher) should be used. Directly after a treatment and on days one through four, Skin Wellness Physicians recommends using only mineral-based makeup and sunscreens, waiting to resume regular makeup and sunscreen use on the fifth day after treatment.

Microneedling can be safely repeated every four to six weeks until the desired result is achieved. The number of treatments required will depend on each individual patient's response to the treatment. Most patients will begin to see results after the very first appointment, followed by ideal results after at least three treatments. Patients with deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, acne scarring, and a history of smoking may require more than three treatments to achieve the desired results. This would be considered the corrective phase, after which patients should consider one to three treatments per year for maintenance.

Can Microneedling Be Handled at Home?

Dermarollers are available for home microneedling treatments, but performing the treatment without professional supervision can lead to problems that can be avoided when treated by a skilled dermatologist at Skin Wellness Physicians. Many dermarollers are made of low-quality materials that cannot be sterilized to the same degree as medical-grade materials. Using a non-sterile device to puncture the skin can lead to infections. Dermarollers also lack the necessary precision and power necessary to provide safe, effective, and more predictable results.
