Why Seasonal Skincare Matters

Our skin is constantly adapting to changes in the environment—and as the seasons shift, so do its needs. Factors like temperature, humidity, sun exposure, and wind all affect the skin’s moisture levels and barrier function. What works well for your skin in Florida’s humid summers may not be effective during the drier, cooler winter months.

Here in Naples, we’re fortunate to experience only a brief period of dry winter weather. While we may not face frigid temperatures or icy conditions, even our short spells of cooler temps and lower humidity can take a toll on the skin. That’s why it’s important to make small, thoughtful changes to your routine as the seasons change.

Dry weather and reduced humidity call for a gentler, more hydrating approach to help prevent dry, scaly, or itchy skin. Here are a few key steps for maintaining healthy skin during the winter months:

Daily Winter Skincare Tips:

  1. Bathe only once a day, avoid hot water, and keep showers short.
  2. Use a mild, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soap, such as Dove for Sensitive Skin.
  3. Moisturize within three minutes of bathing using a rich cream (not lotion). Creams offer a thicker consistency and create a better barrier to keep the skin hydrated. My personal favorite for the body is CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, but there are many excellent options available.

For Dry Facial Skin:

My go-to products for a winter facial skincare routine include:

  • SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser–use twice daily
  • SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2–a nourishing serum that helps restore skin barrier function

Don’t Forget Sunscreen!

Even during the winter months, UV rays are still present — and still damaging. The sun may not feel as strong, but its effects are cumulative year-round.

My favorite daily SPF is EltaMD. Their new product, EltaMD Skin Recovery, combines broad-spectrum sun protection with ingredients that soothe irritated, dry skin and support the skin’s natural barrier. Everyone’s sunscreen needs are different, so it may take some trial and error to find the one that works best for you.

Winter Foot Care:

Dry, cracked soles are a common winter complaint. I find the evening is the best time for intensive foot care. Before bed:

  • Apply a generous layer of an exfoliating cream
  • Follow with a thick coat of Vaseline
  • Slip on a pair of white cotton socks
  • Put your feet up and relax!

There are many effective exfoliants available. My favorite is a prescription formula called Xirun Gel, which contains lactic acid and urea—two powerhouse ingredients for exfoliation and moisture retention.
