What are the First Signs of Psoriasis?
If you’ve been wondering whether that stubborn, scaly rash could be psoriasis, you’re not alone. We see psoriasis in Florida every day, and we know how climate, sun exposure, and stress can affect this skin condition. The good news: Recognizing early psoriasis symptoms and getting a diagnosis can help you manage flares sooner and feel more comfortable in your skin.
In the earliest stages, psoriasis often shows up as well‑defined, reddish or salmon‑colored patches topped with silvery scale. They may itch, sting, or burn, and commonly appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, or palms and soles. Tiny pinpoint bleeding after the scale lifts can happen. Nails may pit, thicken, or separate from the nailbed. Some people notice morning stiffness or swollen, tender joints—possible signs of psoriatic arthritis. Guttate psoriasis can start as many small, drop‑like scaly spots after a sore throat or other infection.
We’re often asked about psoriasis vs. eczema. While both are inflammatory skin diseases, psoriasis plaques are usually thicker with sharper borders and silvery scale, and they favor extensor areas (like elbows and knees). Eczema more often itches intensely, can ooze, and tends to affect skin folds. A dermatologist’s exam is the best way to tell the difference and confirm the diagnosis.
Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition. Your immune system speeds up skin cell turnover, leading to visible inflammation in the skin. Genetics play a role, and common psoriasis triggers include infections, skin injuries, stress, smoking, alcohol, certain medications, and cold, dry weather. Psoriasis is a chronic disease, meaning it tends to wax and wane, but it is not contagious.
Early, personalized psoriasis treatment can calm symptoms and reduce flares. Depending on severity and body areas involved, we may recommend targeted topicals (such as corticosteroids, vitamin D or A analogs), medicated shampoos for the scalp, light therapy, or systemic options and biologic psoriasis medication that address immune pathways. Gentle skincare, regular moisturizer use, sun protection, and stress management can support results. If joints hurt or swell, timely evaluation helps protect mobility.
