Microneedling Aftercare: What Should You Do for Your Skin?

When your skin begins to grow weaker and thinner due to aging, you can restore a more youthful appearance by using cosmetic techniques like microneedling to create more collagen and elastin. Microneedling also stimulates blood circulation to promote healthier skin. Although this treatment is minimally invasive and there’s very little recovery time, a little aftercare will be required while you’re healing. You can expect to have minor side effects such as flushed skin that looks as if you have a mild to moderate sunburn, along with swelling that continues for the next 24 hours or more. The length of recovery varies depending on the depth of the treatment, how many passes were performed, and how your skin reacts to microneedling. There may be some peeling, bumps, breakouts, and dryness. Want to get the most out of this collagen induction therapy from our Naples-based Skin Wellness Physicians practice?

It’s always best to follow your specific provider’s advice, since the right aftercare techniques for you will depend on your skin type along with your medical history. With that in mind, there are still some general tips that can help you minimize side effects and complications. You’ll be able to resume most of your normal activities after a treatment session, but be vigilant about protecting your skin:

Wear Sunscreen Constantly

During the first two weeks after microneedling, it will be critical to wear sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 whenever you go outdoors. Avoid outright sun exposure as much as possible, since  your post-treatment skin has a higher risk for sun damage.

Use Gentle Products

Refrain from using any harsh products like acids that exfoliate the skin. Don’t use scented products, either. Instead, use a gentle cleanser and either avoid makeup or use only non-comedogenic makeup during the first 24 hours.

Work to Prevent Infections

You may need to apply a topical antibiotic cream. Wash your hands before you touch your face. During the first 72 hours after a treatment, avoid activities that might make infections more likely to occur, such as swimming pools, saunas, and intense, sweaty gym workouts that expose your skin to bacteria.
