Important Cosmeceuticals: Part 2

Let us continue our discussion on buzz-worthy cosmeceutical ingredients (if you missed Part 1, you can read it here):

Baicalin

This ingredient is found in anti-aging formulations, such as SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E. It is an antioxidant found in the plant Baikal Skullcap—a purple flowering plant found in East Asia. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and may inhibit dark pigment formation in the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

This ingredient is found in dermal fillers (our Florida practice offers several), anti-aging creams, sunscreens such as EltaMD UV Sheer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50+, as well as moisturizers such as SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier and Hydrating B5 Gel. It is a naturally occurring component in the skin and can provide long lasting hydration by binding to water. As we age, the production of natural hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases.

Resveratrol

This ingredient is in acne products and anti-aging creams such as SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E. It is found in botanical products, such as grape skin and seeds. Therefore, red wine is a natural source of this powerful antioxidant. It also has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties.

Tri-peptide

This ingredient is found in anti-aging creams, such as SkinCeuticals Body Tightening Concentrate and Tripeptide-R Neck Repair. Peptides are like proteins, but shorter in length. When applied topically, it helps stimulate collagen and improve healing.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5 (also known as pantothenic acid) is found in moisturizers, such as SkinCeuticals B5 Gel. It can help restore skin elasticity and promote wound healing, while preventing water loss and improving hydration.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E (also known as tocopherol or alpha-tocopherol) is found in antioxidant serums, sunscreens (such as EltaMD UV Sheer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50+), and anti-aging creams (such as SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and Resveratrol B E). It is an antioxidant that protects your skin from radiation and sun exposure. It can help prevent the formation of sunburn cells and free radicals.

Zinc Pyrithione

This ingredient is found in dandruff shampoo and antifungal creams. It is a complex molecule made of zinc and pyrithione, and therefore it is different from zinc or zinc oxide, which may be found in sunscreens. Zinc pyrithione can inhibit fungal growth and is safe to use even during pregnancy.
