Sculptra and Hyaluronic Acid Fillers for Facial Rejuvenation in Patients on GLP-1 Inhibitors

The rising use of GLP-1 receptor agonists—such as semaglutide and tirzepatide—for weight loss and diabetes management has led to notable facial volume loss in many patients. This effect, often referred to as ‘Ozempic face,” results from the rapid reduction of subcutaneous fat, leading to skin laxity, hollowness, and increased facial aging. To address these concerns, aesthetic practitioners are increasingly turning to biostimulatory and volumizing fillers. We use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and Sculptra® at our Naples and Marco Island-based practice to help to restore a youthful appearance for patients.

Sculptra®: A Biostimulatory Approach

Sculptra® (poly-L-lactic acid) is a collagen-stimulating injectable that gradually restores facial volume by promoting neocollagenesis. Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra® works over several months, providing a more natural and sustained rejuvenation. For GLP-1 patients experiencing significant fat loss, Sculptra® is an excellent option for improving skin texture and reinforcing structural integrity without the risk of excessive swelling or migration.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Instant Volume and Hydration

HA fillers, such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®, provide immediate volume correction and hydration. These fillers are particularly useful for addressing nasolabial folds, under-eye hollows, and mid-face volume loss. In GLP-1 patients, HA fillers should be used judiciously to avoid overcorrection, as ongoing weight loss may continue altering facial contours.

Combination Therapy for Optimal Results

A layered approach combining Sculptra® for collagen stimulation and HA fillers for targeted volumization yields the best aesthetic outcomes. Treatment plans should be tailored based on the patient’s degree of fat loss and skin quality, ensuring gradual and natural-looking rejuvenation. Regular follow-ups and touch-ups help maintain results as weight loss progresses.
