What Should You Avoid After an IPL Treatment?

The Skin Wellness Physicians team provides intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments to restore a more even, smooth skin tone and texture for patients who are often anticipating beautiful results, but still curious about what happens after Forever Young BBL. Our Naples-based Skin Wellness Physicians team explains what to expect during each individualized consultation, but there are a few things you can learn ahead of time to help make the recovery process as easy as possible.

IPL is a light-based treatment as opposed to a laser treatment. Although laser and IPL treatments work similarly, one of the main differences between them is that IPL gives off pulses of light of different wavelengths as opposed to a focused beam of a single wavelength. IPL can treat multiple types of imperfections at the same time, including pigmentation irregularities, scars, and spider veins. The recovery time for IPL treatments will vary depending on how aggressive the treatment is and where on the body it’s applied.

In most cases, there is minimal downtime, and you can resume your normal activities as soon as you’d like after a session. However, occasionally, some redness, pigmentation, blistering, and bruising will occur. These side effects typically resolve within two weeks. You will need to avoid sun exposure and strenuous exercise during that time.

For the first few hours after the treatment, your skin will feel like if it has been sunburned. Applying ice packs or a cool washcloth can help relieve some of the discomfort.

The dark spots on the skin will usually peel off within a few weeks, so avoid putting makeup or lotion on the area that was treated for 24 hours—and beware of what to watch for in the days after that. Protect your skin with SPF 30 sunscreen and wash your face with a cleanser for sensitive skin while you’re healing.
