Which Types of Wrinkles Does BOTOX® Address?

Although we don’t mind the wisdom and experience that comes with age, wrinkles are a part of getting older that most of us don’t look forward to. Thankfully, cosmetic treatments are available to minimize these pesky lines and creases if they bother us—but since not all wrinkles are the same, dermatologists need to use different techniques depending on which lines are being addressed and where they’re located. Those tiny crinkles at the corners or your eyes and between your eyebrows? All are linked to the facial expressions we make each day while communicating with others. BOTOX® is what our Naples-based injectors use to counteract these specific signs of aging, which are known as expression lines.

It isn’t possible to keep your face completely still all the time, which is unfortunate, because the constant, repetitive movements cause your skin to stretch and form wrinkles. These lines become more apparent when your skin loses significant amounts of collagen and elastin as you age. Overactive facial muscles can also sometimes cause asymmetry on certain areas of the face.

BOTOX® is FDA-approved for three types of expression lines: crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Additionally, it’s used off-label to treat other skin irregularities. The following are some of the most popular signs of aging BOTOX® addresses:

Crow’s Feet

We use the muscles around the eyes constantly, and the skin is very thin there. Crow’s feet are the small, diagonal lines that branch out around the outer corners of the eyes, resembling the toes on a bird’s foot. These fine lines are associated with smiling and laughing—and also age.

Frown Lines

Also referred to as “glabellar lines” or “elevens,” vertical frown lines form between the eyebrows due to frowning and squinting.

Forehead Lines

The muscle contractions when we raise our eyebrows sometimes result in horizontal forehead lines. Over time, these folds can create grooves that are visible even when the forehead is at rest.

Gummy Smile

When the muscles above the upper lip are overactive, they might pull the lip up too much when you smile, exposing a significant amount of gum. BOTOX® relaxes these muscles, creating a less-revealing smile.

Dimpled Chin

BOTOX® relaxes and smooths creases on the chin caused by an overactive mentalis muscle on the face.
